IMPORTANT OPENING UPDATE
Due to inclement weather last weekend, the Dec. 13th opening was canceled. We had hoped that a modification to the court order for openings could be obtained that would enable us volunteers to open this week instead.
Unfortunately, the modification was not obtained.
Therefore we have been advised by David Baum, attorney for Grand View, not to open on Sunday, Dec. 20, without the court's approval.
THE NEXT OPENING DATE WILL BE FRIDAY, DEC. 25 FROM 12 NOON - 3 PM. (NOT 4PM, AS IT IS A HOLIDAY AND VOLUNTEERS ARE ONLY BEING ASKED TO GIVE THREE HOURS OF TIME SO THAT THEY CAN SPEND CHRISTMAS WITH THEIR FAMILIES.
2010 OPENING DATES WILL BE AS PREVIOUSLY ORDERED --JANUARY 1 (NEW YEAR'S DAY) JANUARY 6 (ARMENIAN CHRISTMAS), JANUARY 10, JANUARY 24 -- UNLESS PREVENTED BY INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS.
PLEASE MONITOR THIS WEBSITE IN DAYS LEADING UP TO OPENING DATES FOR UPDATES AS WARRANTED. THANK YOU!
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009 -- A TENTATIVE SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED IN THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST GRAND VIEW MEMORIAL PARK! PLEASE READ THIS PAGE FOR DETAILS ON THE PROCESS!
The story is covered today by the Glendale News-Press.
THE 12/7 DEADLINE TO FILE CLAIMS HAS PAST. THE NEXT PHASE WILL BE A FAIRNESS HEARING IN MID-JANUARY. UPDATES WILL BE POSTED HERE AS WE GET THEM.
Grand View Memorial Park in Glendale, Calif., has been closed for regular business since June 13, 2006 and remains under a preservation order by the court. Although it is anticipated that the cemetery will be restored to normal operations under new ownership in the future, it is not known exactly when that will happen, pending the outcome of various legal and government actions. In the meantime, Grand View is opened for limited public visitations from 12-4pm on specific court-ordered dates. This is a volunteer website created to provide the public with up-to-date information about these dates as well as background information about the cemetery's history and news coverage of the on-going cases.
NEXT PUBLIC VISITATION DATE
(12N - 3PM SHARP! NO EXCEPTIONS)
ADDITIONAL COURT ORDERED VISITATION DATES
(12-4PM ALL DAYS UNLESS NOTED)
On October 13, 2009, Judge Wiley [who is sitting in Department 309
while Judge Mohr is on temporary assignment to the Court of Appeal] ordered
that Grand View be opened on the following additional 2009 and 2010 dates: NOVEMBER 1, NOVEMBER 15, NOVEMBER 26 (THANKSGIVING)
DECEMBER 13, DECEMBER 25 (CHRISTMAS)
JANUARY 1 (NEW YEAR'S DAY) JANUARY 6 (ARMENIAN CHRISTMAS), JANUARY 10, JANUARY 24
Read the order here (PDF format)If you want the cemetery openings to continue and increase in frequency there are two things you can do:
1. Volunteer-We need people who can commit to one or two openings a month. People interested in volunteering at upcoming visitations should call the law office of David Baum at (310) 990-3660.
2. Obey the Rules-Especially
regarding fire. It is very important that there be no smoking, fires or
use of incense during the opening. Violations of this rule can cause the
Glendale Fire Marshall to oppose further openings.
Thank you Paul Ayers for supplying the new visitation information!
West & North Mausoleums will be opened during visitations ONLY IF WE HAVE SUFFICIENT VOLUNTEERS AVAILABLE TO STAFF THE BUILDINGS. If you need access to one of the mausoleums during your visit, stop by the volunteer desk at the front gate and let us know; we will advise you as to the day's conditions.
Visitations are staffed by volunteers who are there to make a positive difference by opening the cemetery for loved ones and assisting the public in finding graves only. We do not represent the cemetery. If you have specific legal questions pertaining to your individual situation or concerns and grievances about the cemetery in general, please contact your attorney in this action or the California State Cemetery and Funeral Bureau. Thanks! :)
IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ:
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE AND FOR FIRE SAFETY REASONS, PLEASE, THE NO SMOKING AND NO INCENSE BURNING RULES MUST BE ENFORCED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION IN KEEPING GRAND VIEW SAFE!
ALSO, PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN DRINKING, FLOWER HYDRATION AND CLEANING WATER BECAUSE THE RECLAIMED WATERING SYSTEM IS NOT OPERATIONAL DURING VISITATION HOURS.
